Riprap shall be placed as close as possible to the lines, grades and thickness
- shown on the plans and shall be placed in conjunction with construction o1.`
• the channel with only sufficient delay in providing the riprap protection as
' may be necessary to avoid disturbance of the riprap due to other construe- •
lion operations.
I~
~ ~ B. Dumped Riprap
i Stone for riprap shall be dumped on the prepared slope or area in a manner
which will produce a reasonable well-graded mass of stone with the
minimum practicable percentage of voids. The entire mass of stone shall be
placed so as to be in conformance with the lines, grades and thickness shown
on the plans. Riprap shall be placed to its full course thickness at one
` operation and in such a manner as to avoid displacing the underlyiry;
material. Placing of riprap in layers, or by dumping into chutes, or by
~ similar methods likely to cause segregation, wtll not be permitted.
The larger stones shall be well distributed and the entire mass of stone shall
conform to the gradation specified in Section 2.02B. All material going into
riprap protection shall be so placed and distributed that there will be no
large accumulations of either the larger or smaller sizes of stone and the
surface should be relatively smooth with no large protrusions of rock.
l Riprap specified on the Drawings and/or designated by the Engineer may be
dumped by a machine and machine spread except adjacent to structures and
in locations where machine spreading provides an unsatisfactory surface; in
these locations hand laid rock may be required to make a proper transition
to existing or satisfactory areas.
It is the intent of these Specifications to produce a fairly compact riprap .
Gabion baskets or mattresses shall be constructed as nearly as possible to
the dimensions shown on the plans. Jn addition to conforming with recom.-
mendations of the gabion manufacturer, the following minimum requirer
i ments shall be adhered to:
1. The section of the stream bed and banks where the units are to be
~- placed shall be excavated to the depths required and cleared of large
stones. Each row of gabion baskets or mattresses shall be wired
together and the walls and ends of the units tied to cuts in the bank.
r A plastic filter cloth or filter blanket shall be placed under the
bottom gabion prior to placement of the baskets or mattresses.
2. Prior to filling the baskets or mattresses with rock, the gebions shall
( be stretched by means of tension wires. The tension wires shall t>e
L removed after the filling operation is complete.
_ protection in which all sizes of material are placed in their proportion>.
Hand placing or rearranging of stones by mechanical equipment may be
C required to the extent necessary to secure the results specified.
C. Wire Enclosed Riprap (Gabions)
~ 3. The facing rocks shall be hand placed, leaving a minimum amount of
L voids. After The basket has been one-third filled, the sides shall be
secured with cross-connecting wires. After the baskets have been •
C filled flush with top (do not overfill), the lids shall be wired closed.
~ 02540-8
L
