Rifle Gravel Pit#1 April 2022
See Section 6.3.3 for a discussion of the temporary and long-term seeding and
revegetation plans. See Section 6.4 for a discussion of how the success of the revegetation
plans will be monitored. See Section 6.5 for a discussion of how noxious weeds will be
controlled.
6.6.1 Previously Disturbed/Unnecessary Areas
Reclamation of unnecessary mine components (e.g., previously used areas which no longer
will provide productive aggregate extraction) is limited due to the wet mining process that
Scott will use. Previously-used areas will be incorporated into the pond area, and no active
reclamation is proposed for the majority of the pond. The wetland fringe along the edge of
the pond will be constructed and vegetated as the project progresses, although it may
require several years for appropriate reclamation species establishment and weed control.
The wetland fringe areas are not anticipated to exceed 0.8 acres.
Once mining activity is complete, Scott will reclaim the Operating Area by applying topsoil
and the upland seed mix. This reclamation area will consist of 1.93 acres.
6.6.2 Active Mining Areas
Reclamation of perimeter berms and adjacent upland buffers will be initiated upon
completion of the construction of the perimeter berms, and will proceed contemporaneously
with the mining activity. Reclamation of these areas may take up to a year for regrading,
contouring, and reseeding, and multiple years after that to establish reclamation species and
control noxious weeds. The berm and buffer reclamation areas will include 3.90 acres.
6.7 Monitoring Reclamation Success
Continued monitoring of the reclamation will ensure its success. Scott used input from the
local NRCS office and Garfield County to determine the capacity of the reclaimed land to
support vegetation to control erosion. If minor changes or modifications are needed to the
seeding and reclamation plan, revision plans will be submitted to the Division. Information
on all disturbed and reclaimed areas, as well as any other important items regarding the
reclamation, will be submitted in the annual reports to the Division, Garfield County and
CPW, who will also be consulted on the progress of reclamation.
42
