eew! Is there a cautionary tale somewhere in Summitville Consolidated Mining Corporation's
good intentions for gold recovery in Rio Grande County Colorado?
In December 1992, as parent company Galactic Resouces was going bankrupt, they abruptly abandoned
their cyanide leaching opertaion. Toxic spills ensued. The EPA promptly added it as a cleanup site on the
National Priority List(NPL) in 1994.A$30 million dollar settlement ensued.
What concernes me most is CJK Milling's use of copious amounts of potable Parkville Water Distirct
water and employing a sodium cyanide technique for metals recovery is that it is happenning adjacent to
the eadville Sanitation wastewater faciliiy. I'm more than a tad concerned about the accelerated ,
escalation of water rates&sewer rates as it is.
Suely you're aware Of the Colorado Department of Public Health+Environment's much publicized, ongoing
troubles with Leadville Sanitation wastewater facility having excessive mercury levels in their
discharge water.
I think it a porrly conceived idea to approve CJK Mi1Hng's application.
But,what if CJK's expertise in metals recovery could facilate the removal and recovery of this mercury?
Could mercury have marketable value that CJK could benefit from while helping the residents of Leadville
at the same time?
I've been wondered , if anyone at Colorado Depatment of Public Health&Enviroment(CDPHE)
has found the point source(s) causing these unpermissable mercury levels?
Could there be an un-tapped wealth of information stemming from X-Ray Fluorescent compiled data of
the 1991 California Gulch Residential Soil Sampling Program by CAMP,DRESSER&McKEE of Denver CO?
Due to an EPA Administrative Order--a uniform 200'sampling grid was layed over the town of Leadville
and soils samples were taken at 3 differing horizons at each sampling point.
Has anyone ever thought to re-visit and re-purpose that 1991 raw or XRF data from that
soil sampling survey to perhaps discover today's cause of inercury appearing in Leadville's sewer system?
If it is helpful to know, ! recall that ...
Rick Chappell was the lead geochemist with CAMP, DRESSER&McKEE,the repositor of that XRF data.
ROY F.WESTON &ASSOCIATES was the prime contractor for the EPA Region VIII .
JAMES P.WALSH &ASSOCIATES were soil scientists from Boulder CO.
Sincerely,
Andrea Bellhouse
PO Box 198
Leadville CO 80461
cc: CDPHE, Leadville Sanitation District, City of Leadville
