My wife and I have lived approximately one mile south of the Golden Mine for
close to 30 years. I am a graduate of the Colorado School of Mines and professional engineer.
I am strongly opposed to the expansion of the Golden Mine for the following reasons, among others:
The mine occupies State owned surface and extracts State owned minerals for the benefit of private enterprise.
The mineral lease was made decades ago before the significant residential and commercial development that
now surrounds the mine. The extraction of State minerals for private benefit is no longer compatible with uses
of the surrounding lands.
Expansion of the mine would cause additional damage to the visual backdrop at the northern entrance to
Golden. The mine has been active for decades and has removed significant amounts of ore from the eastern
flank of the hogback but no apparent effort has been made to reclaim or re-vegetate those excavations.
Whatever the economic benefit of any royalty income to the Schools, it does not justify the cost in Quality-of-
Life considerations for all who live or recreate in close proximity to the mine.
The mine as currently operated, and as proposed may not comply with all local land use rules. The Mineral
extraction at this location may not be the highest and best use of the land since highest and best use requires
legal uses.
Expansion of the mine would negatively impact the property values of residences in close proximity.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1976007
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
