COLORADO
Parks and Wildlife
Department of Natural Resources
Salida Service Center
7405 W Highway 50
Salida,Co 81201
P 719.530.5520 1 F 719.530.5554
September 9th, 2016
John Roorda,Planning Manager
Chaffee County Planning and Zoning Department
PO Box 699
Salida, CO 81201
Re: Proposed Gravel Pit at T 14 S, R78 W, S W 1/4, S W 1 A
Dear Mr. Roorda:
Thank you for the opportunity to comment regarding the application of the proposed Frank
Holman gravel pit located in Chaffee County in T50N, R7E, SW 1/4, SE 1/4, and SE 1 A SW l/4
of Section 36. The proposed site will consist of 27.76 acres of gravel pit area. It will be an
open-pit mine using surface mining techniques. The property is owned by Frank Holman.
Access to the site will be from County Road 140.
After visiting the site it appears that the current use of this land is for grazing of livestock, and is
composed mainly of dry land pasture with few shrubs. No riparian corridors shall be affected.
Irrigated pastures are located to the east and are currently in alfalfa production.
Big game species that frequent the area include elk, mule and whitetail deer, black bears, and
mountain lions. Elk and deer will winter in the area and use the property for travel corridors
between public lands. Elk and deer will also graze upon the dry land and irrigated pastures on
this property and surrounding ranches.
Numerous small game animals are found in this area, which include: but are not limited to; red
fox, coyotes, bobcat, cottontail rabbits, and white-tailed jackrabbits. Various songbirds, raptors,
and reptiles are also present in the vicinity of the proposed pit.
After reviewing the maps and document for the proposed site CPW does not foresee significant
impacts to wildlife or wildlife habitat. To our knowledge there are no known Threatened or
Endangered species within or in close proximity to the project site.
j Colorado Parks and Wildlife would suggest that any ground disturbance be reclaimed to alfalfa
or to native grass species, and recommend using NRCS seeding guidelines. We also agree with
the plan to stockpile and reuse existing topsoil for reclamation of slopes and pit floor.
Bob Bob D Broscherd,Due Aoi,Colorado Parks arid Wddhle•Paris and Wildlife Commission Rolm W Nay•Chns Casuira r,Clr u•lev re Hove,Vice-(, w.
John Howard•Bill Kane•Dale Patel•.vnes Pnbyl,Secrelary•James Vigil•Dean Wnrgfidd•Michelle Zunmei n><rn•Alex Zrpp I .' •jJ
