Exhibit H: Wildlife Information
1. Introduction
The Project area is located in the Upper Uncompahgre River watershed. The area is part of the
San Juan Mountain Range characterized by rugged mountain peaks, steep drainages and long, narrow
valleys. The area is dominated by Engelmann spruce-alpine fir habitat type and willow habitat along
Sneffels Creek. The Project area is near County Road 26/Forest Road 853. County Road 26 is a popular
recreational jeep route into the picturesque Yankee Boy Basin and access point to the Mt. Sneffels
Wilderness area.
2. Significant Game Resources on the Affected Lands
The Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife (CPW),identifies a number of game species' overall range
that passes through the Revenue Mine. These species are indicated in Table 1 below. The Revenue
Virginius Mine is located inside of game management unit(GMU) 65. GMU 65 is a popular unit for big
game. The area around the Revenue Mine is especially popular for early season tags such as archery and
black powder. Due to the high elevation of the mine site, game animals typically leave the area for lower
elevations during the majority of the hunting season.
Scientific Name Habitat(s)Potentially Used
JL
rRo;ckyMouintain Cervus elaphus Montane and subalpine coniferous forests, mountain shrub
Elk communities,and aspen forest.
Bighorn sheep Ovis canadensis Steep high mountain terrain dominated by grass, low
shrubs,and rock cover.
