The first step in reclaiming the ventilation shafts is to excavate down approximately
four to six feet around each opening and cutting the casing off from three to four feet
below the ground surface. After removing the casing and concrete pad, the surface
structures will be dismantled and placed down hole and each opening will be covered
with a steel plate and sealed, upon which a six-inch concrete slab will be poured. The
concrete slab will be covered with overburden or soil generated from the excavation.
The volume of material required to backfill over the top of the concrete plug will be the
same as the amount of material removed during shaft construction. The backfilled
material will be blended in to match the local topography with a minimum of 6 inches
of topsoil or native materials placed on top of the backfilled areas. The sources of this
material will be soil or other native materials (e.g., rock) generated during shaft
construction. The Monongahela Shaft and associated structures are located in a
previously disturbed area and will be reclaimed using materials excavated from the site
to blend with the existing landscape.
3.3 Dismantle Buildings and Structures at Portal Area
Reclamation will include the removal of certain buildings and other structures. The
following structures will be removed at the Revenue Portal area:
• Diesel storage and filling station
• Propane storage A
• Propane storage B
• Propane storage C
• Ventilation Fan
• Underground warehouse and shop
• Reagent Room
• Waste storage building and secondary containment
• Tailing thickener tank
• Materials storage buildings
Exhibit E Reclamation Plan E-5
Amendment 02
December 2021
