1 . Weed Control Plan
Weeds at the Pino Pit will be controlled using a combination of cultural, mechanical, biological, and
chemical methods. Working with Huerfano County, the permittee has developed a weed control
plan to address the weeds expected to be encountered to operations and reclamation at the Pino
Pit.
The Division and Huerfano County weed control staff will be consulted regarding any weed
infestation area and any control measures prior to their initiation.
During the removal of any topsoil, if an area of heavy seed infestation is encountered, it will be
buried in the slopes rather than used as a growth medium. During all of the mining operation, the
permit area will be monitored closely every year which the operator is active to determine if there
are any additional weeds invading the area.
1.1. Inspection
The disturbance area will be inspected for the presence of weeds each spring and fall. Any weeds
identified during the site inspection will be noted by the applicant with photos and a control method
implemented.
1.2. Control Methods
Weeds may be cut, pulled, or mowed provided that they are promptly treated with an herbicide.
Spot and area spraying of weeds with herbicide will also be conducted as appropriate.
Transportation of soils containing viable plant material is to be avoided to reduce potential weed
spread.
1.3. Herbicides
The following herbicides are recommended by Huerfano County and will be the basis for chemical
treatment of weeds. However, other herbicides may be used as needed to accomplish effective
weed control.
• Milestone (10%solution)applied to cut stumps immediately after cutting, best during the late
summer or fall for tamarisk and Russian olive
• Triclopyr 4 (2 qt/acre) applied to actively growing plants during the late summer or fall for
tamarisk and Russian olive
• 2,4-D 4 lb. Amine (3-4 pints/acre)for spot spraying of Scotch thistle and/or puncturevine
Spraying will be achieved using a backpack or small vehicle mounted sprayer.
Pino Pit
November 2021 0 Lewicki&Associates
