PERMIT#:M2006050
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS:RAR
INSPECTION DATE:22 September 2021
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted by the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety(The Division),
in response to the surety release request submitted on 4 August 2021. The site was previously inspected by
the Division on 26 April 2019, during a routine inspection. Jason Eager with Lincoln County accompanied
me, Robin Reilley, of the DRMS during the inspection. The weather was calm, and the sky was clear.
The Andersen Farms Pit is located 14 miles northeast of Genoa, Colorado. Access to the site is off of County
Rd 35. The pit is situated on Dugout Creek, which only flows during heavy storm events. When carrying
water, the creek flows eastward. The pit is a 11 Oc operation permitted for 7.6 acres for the removal of sand
and gravel for county road maintenance and repair. The site is surrounded by rangeland and the post-mining
land use is rangeland. A mine sign was observed as required by Rule 3.1.12
The approved mining plan allows for extraction from the creek bed to a maximum depth of 6 feet, and
extraction in a pit adjacent to the northern creek bank to a maximum depth of 12 feet. The operator
committed to leaving the southern creek bank undisturbed. The approved reclamation plan calls for grading
all disturbed slopes to 3H:1 V or flatter, replacing topsoil at an average depth of 6 inches on disturbed land
outside of the creek bed, and revegetating that land with a rangeland seed mixture.
As reclamation has been completed, the site was not active at the time of inspection. All material stockpiles,
structures and equipment have been removed. It is unclear from annual reports when reclamation took place.
Mining activities appeared to have been restricted to the north side of the creek. The creek bed comprised of
fine sand, had little to no vegetation and appeared to not have been mined in some time. Seeding was not
required in the mined areas of the river bed. Most vegetation had gone dormant at this time of year.
Vegetation was sparse in places on the sandy soils, and no significant areas of weeds were noted at the time
of inspection. Mined slopes exhibited a 3H:1 V or flatter slope. The pit was shallow at approximately 8 feet
deep on average. North facing slopes exhibited some erosional features with vegetation becoming
established and minimizing any runoff effects. A berm along the southern edge of the reclaimed pit was left
to capture water for livestock.
The Division currently holds no financial warranty because it is a county operation. No problems or
violations were noted during this inspection. The Division finds that the pit can be released.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to: Robin Reilley at the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver, CO 80203. Direct contact can be made by phone
at 303.866.3567 ext 8105 or, via email at robin.reilley@ state.co.us
Page 2 of 3
