PERMIT #: M1978072
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: RAR
INSPECTION DATE: 22 September, 2021
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted by the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (The Division),
in response to the surety release request submitted on 4 August 2021. The site was previously inspected by
the Division on 28 January 2020 during a routine inspection. Jason Eager with Lincoln County accompanied
me, Robin Reilley, of the DRMS during the inspection. The weather was calm, and the sky was clear.
The Brent Pit is located on the south bank of Hell Creek, north of Arriba, and accessed through a gate off of
County Road 3R just east of County Road 42. The pit is a 112 operation permitted for 14.16 acres for the
removal of sand and gravel for county road maintenance and repair. A mine sign was observed as required
by Rule 3.1.12.
As reclamation is stated to have been completed, the site was not active at the time of inspection. All
material stockpiles, structures and equipment have been removed. Annual reports indicate that reclamation
occurred in the 2019/2020 report cycle. The Hell Creek stream bank where piping was observed in the past
has been stabilized with concrete block placed as riprap. There was evidence of rilling on portions of the
north facing slope of the former highwall. The soils in the area are silty, eolian soils and prone to visible
signs of wind and water erosion. Seeding took place on two occasions to mitigate a marginal response the
first time. Vegetation for the most part was adequately established with diverse rangeland species. Some
weeds were present, notably Xanthium strumarium (cockleburs), and did not pose a cause for concern.
Overall the site appeared stable.
The Division currently holds no financial warranty because it is a county operation. No problems or
violations were noted during this inspection. The Division finds that the pit can be released.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to: Robin Reilley at the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver, CO 80203. Direct contact can be made by phone
at 303.866.3567 ext 8105 or, via email at robin.reilley@ state.co.us
PHOTOGRAPHS
Photo 1: Mine identification sign.
