PERMIT #: M2010083
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: RAR
INSPECTION DATE: 22 September 2021
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted by the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (The Division),
in response to the surety release request submitted on 4 August 2021. The site was previously inspected by
the Division on 26 April, 2019 during a routine inspection. Jason Eager with Lincoln County accompanied
Robin Reilley during the inspection. The weather was calm, and the sky was clear.
The Newsom Pit is located 13 miles northeast of Limon, CO off of Co Rd 24. The pit is situated on the
Arikaree River, which only flows during heavy storm events. When carrying water, the creek flows
eastward. The pit is a 110c operation permitted for 9.43 acres for the removal of sand and gravel for county
road maintenance and repair. The site is surrounded by rangeland and the post -mining land use is rangeland.
A mine sign was observed as required by Rule 3.1.12.
The site has ceased activity. In the past, the county extracted and/or hauled material off site. The river was
dry during the inspection. The site has been reclaimed and all material stockpiles have been removed with
the exception of stockpile at the south end of the site. This stockpile remains for use by the landowner.
Backfilling, grading and topsoil laydown occurred in 2019 and seeding occurred in 2020 according to annual
reports. Pit slopes had been reclaimed to 3H:1V or flatter. The areas located just east of the pit and the
northern portion of the permit area (located north of the river), have been undisturbed by mining activities.
Vegetation for the most part was well established with diverse rangeland species. Some weeds were present
and did not pose a cause for concern. The riverbed and banks appeared stable.
No problems or violations were noted during this inspection. The Division currently holds no financial
warranty because it is a county operation. The Division finds that the pit can be released.
Photographs taken during the inspection are attached.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to: Robin Reilley at the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215, Denver, CO 80203. Direct contact can be made by phone
at 303.866.3567 ext 8105 or, via email at robin.reilley@ state.co.us
PHOTOGRAPHS
.7 _—
LINC.OLN CTY
NEWSOM - PIT '"
M-20I0 083
e ,
Photo 1: Mine Identification Sign.
