PERMIT 4: M-1991-035
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE: September 9,2021
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted by Eric Scott of the Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety(Division/DRMS).
DRMS was accompanied on this inspection by permittee representative Andre Laroche and consultant Bruce
Humphries. The Bluestone Pit is located in Jefferson County, east of Hwy 93 and west of the Rocky Flats
National Wildlife Refuge. The site is permitted at 257 acres with a post-mining land use of wildlife habitat.
Weather at the time of the inspection was sunny and hot. DRMS met permit representatives at the site
entrance from Westgate Road at approximately 13:00 and proceeded into the site.
The site is well into final reclamation, and documentation from the SEC) has been provided to confirm that the
existing pond at the north end of the site has been designated as "pre-81", and therefore a permanent
augmentation plan will not be required for this feature. No other areas of exposed groundwater were
observed during this inspection.
Reclamation vegetation is well established across the site at this time, and elk were observed in the permit
area during the inspection. No areas of erosion were noted during this inspection, even on embankment
slopes.
The only factor holding back the final release of the permit at this time is the presence of a significant amount
of noxious weed species, as stated on the first page of this report. Knapweed, mullen, and Canada thistle
were observed in areas of the permit— primarily along the access road and in the northern portion of the
permit. Knapweed appears to be the most extensive species at this time, and significant efforts may be
required at this point to eradicate it within the permit area. Knapweed was also noted during a 2016 DRMS
inspection, so this issue has been ongoing for at least 5 years.
Some minor trash items were observed during the course of this inspection that will need to be removed from
the site, however, no other issues were observed.
Inspection Contact Address
Andre Laroche
Lafarge West,Inc.c/o Lafarge North America Inc.
1687 Cox Blvd, Suite 300
Golden,CO 80401
