Outcrop of sillimanitic gneiss with banding.
Mafic Dikes
The mafic dikes are observed in the exposed highwalls within the South and Central Quarry
and are evident in rock cores obtained during drilling. Compositional information is not
available for the mafic dikes but field classifications indicate this unit is rich is iron and
magnesium. The mafic dikes are generally near vertical, about 4 to 6 feet in width, primarily
fine grained, and are linearly continuous across much of the site. The dikes are darker
colored due to mafic minerals being rich in magnesium and iron, and are variable in their
strength and hardness, which ranges from soft to hard (H3 to H6). The mafic dikes can be
more weathered than the adjacent bedrock and tend to cross-cut foliation.
