site could easily erupt into an unmanageable wildfire.Zephyr's"sufficient"quantity of water to mitigate fire risk
is unacceptable. If Zephyr cannot produce carefully calculated gallon quantities, it once again shows a lack of
transparency and desire to care for the environment they plan to disrupt. Future generations of local residents
would pay the price of Zephyr's lack of preparedness and the risks they are willing to take-not Zephyr Gold
USA Ltd.or its parent company Zephyr Minerals Ltd.
Zephyr claims to be"a socially responsible, community oriented company"(front page of 31 August,2021 issue
of the Canon City Shopper).Yet in addition to barring the community from meetings that might better explain
the company's intentions and plans,Zephyr would have as many as 90 workers using the same space as our
trails and parks off Temple Canyon Road. For many residents, this is the only recreational area available to
them. The quality of that recreation will be greatly diminished with haul trucks, delivery trucks, and leftover
tailings(to mention a few impacts)in the same area as where residents bike, hike, bird watch and simply enjoy
the outdoors.
The$261,813 Zephyr has reserved for mine reclamation(when the time comes)is a joke! That amount is
hardly enough to landscape the area, let alone clean up toxic wastes from it.There is no mechanism to account
for inflation,so if permitted, it will be the community living here that will end up paying costs of clean-up. So
much for their claimed economic boost to the community! Even government agencies(for which we both
worked)have slush funds to cover unexpected incidental expenses.Yet Zephyr has no allocation of funds to
address any unexpected incident-such as a fire, power outage, explosion, pollution leakage, etc.Clearly they
have not thought things through nor planned properly. For a company founded in 2010,one would think they
would be better at predicting what is needed in regards to funding and for properly protecting these
communities they claim to care so much about.
Clearly Zephyr does not want to put forth any money, work or effort that is not required directly of them. They
are focused on advancing their flagship Dawson gold project(Bloomberg, online)and are more interested in
answering to their stockholders than in mitigating any water, fire, environmental, recreational or community
health risks.
We appreciate your consideration of these comments and respectfully request that the Dawson Gold Mine
permit application M-2021-046 be denied.Thank you once again for the opportunity to submit these comments.
Sincerely,
Doni Angell and Tim Benton
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Fremont
Enter one county only
Site Name
Dawson Gold Mine
Perm ittee/Operator Name
Zephyr Gold USA Ltd.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload?
Yes 9 No
