It is an underground mine but if we've learned anything from Colorado's mining legacy what happens
underground will have surface impacts, often unanticipated, such as Leadville's Yak Tunnel,Silverton's Gold
King Mine and Rio Grande County's Summitville Mine.
2. Risks for the community more than offset advertised benefits. In the 1950s, positive economic impact was
used to justify the Cotter Uranium Mill but long term costs born by adjoining properties and the community due
to contaminated groundwater, fugitive toxic dust and Superfund Site designation have far exceeded any benefit.
3.Canon City is poised to become the last gotta-move-there resort town on the Arkansas River in Colorado due
to selfless hard work by economic development proponents and non-profits(e.g. Fremont Adventure
Recreation).Their efforts have overcome Canon City's reputation as a prison and Superfund town. The prisons
are here to stay but a new environmentally destructive mine would undo those efforts.
4. DRMS has denied permits to protect the property interests of locals such as the two permit applications from
Transit Mix to develop a Hitchrack Ranch Quarry in El Paso County.Granted we don't have a heavyweight such
as El Pomar Foundation in our corner but I'd like to think the division gives equal consideration to every
complainant.
5.The claimed 90 new jobs are a chimera. Has DRMNS ever seen a mining project whose permit application's
jobs estimate came to fruition? There are many factors outside the mining company's control that determine
employment level. On the other hand, local tourism continues to add jobs and grow government coffers. The
proposed underground gold mine, despite applicant's claims, will negatively impact visitors'impression of the
Royal Gorge Region.
6. It's ironic that a nearby, newly constructed hiking/biking trail from Tunnel Drive to Fremont Peak will be closed
for bighorn lambing season but Zephyr Gold USA, Ltd.,claims surface activities associated with the
underground mine will have minimal impact.
7.Twenty years into a mega drought the Bureau of Reclamation recently imposed cutbacks on the Colorado
River for Lower Basin states with cutbacks anticipated for Upper Basin states next year. Under these historic
conditions it is difficult to reconcile a new mine that will use 65M gallons of water per year.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
Hard Rock
