They dug trenches a few years ago with a specified date to restore the land. The date
came and went without anything being done until pressure was applied for them to meet their requirements.
This generates questions on what we can expect from their reclamation efforts.
The area they have control of is 7.5 miles of land within 1.5 miles of Canon City homes. They have made
promises continually, with nothing fact based to support those promises.we have questions about these
promises.Such as 1.Sufficient water will be retained to fight fires without any suggestion of what they consider
sufficient or who will monitor this. Will the State monitor it?How do they know what would be"sufficient"for our
drought threatened area? 2. The containment pond will meet the mining requirements. What are the
requirements and how long before the liners give out or our new global warming weather gives a 500-year
occurrence with seepage into Grape Creek and Arkansas River? Which will happen since they are 1000 ft.
below the mine area. What is the mining regulation, long enough that we are dead and our children and
grandchildren have to deal with it? It is known that containment ponds eventually wear out over time. Sorry but
the mining record in this area is not very comforting. 3. The 65 million gallons a year of water they use will be
insignificant on underground aquifers. What does insignificant mean in relation to the amount of water available
to us during times of drought? This water will be pumped into the ground similar to fracking. Fracking has
caused earthquakes in places where earthquakes did not occur before. Does Zephyr have money allocated to
repair foundations and other damage to homes that could be affected? What kind of insurance do they have
that will cover catastrophic events caused by their underground mining efforts? Will it cover all the homes in our
area?
What about 3,600 gallons of chemicals, 13,000 lbs.of explosives, along with power(how many California fires
have been caused by power lines?),tools, and equipment that can cause a fire at any time? There are 840
homes within 3-4 miles of the mining site. If a fire starts, in a very short time, it could destroy much more than
Zephyr could hope to pay for. Not to mention the lives involved.
Zephyr would be negatively impacting the community and local environment by disrupting Canon City's means
of revenue from the tourist trade.
Where is their Environmental Impact Statement? How can you approve this without one?My input is Please
DO NOT approve this permit for the sake of the US,Colorado, and anyone else downriver on the Arkansas
River.
