Comment/Objection Narrative*
The attached names of 582 individuals have signed a petition at Change.org requesting that the DRMS deny
Zephyr, Minerals, Ltd mining permit for a Hard Rock mine(number: M2021046).These signatures were
gathered in less than two weeks and are increasing daily. The location would be just 1.4 miles outside of Canon
City,Colorado, and between 1.4 and 4 miles west of 800+homes. However,we are not just concerned about
the homes.
The mine would be in the Grape Creek watershed, just outside of Canon City. It would be in a pristine, valuable
recreational asset of amazing natural beauty whose precious water supply flows into the Arkansas River. It
would be in harm's way should the permit be approved. The City, County, and other entities(e.g., FAR)have
spent ten years and hundreds of thousands of dollars creating a recreation destination that would be destroyed
if the mine becomes yet another mining disaster.
The mine would store 3,600 pounds of chemicals,8,400 gallons of diesel fuel, and 13,000 pounds of
explosives. The location is in a semi-arid climate and a juniper forest. One match is all that would be required to
ignite this tinderbox. With no fire mitigation plan included in the permit application, it is unclear if or how a fire
would be extinguished before it became a wildfire and impacted the entire region.
Up to 90 people might be employed on site.Of great concern are an unknown number of supply vehicles,
construction/maintenance vehicles, refined ore haul trucks, and workers traveling to the site. The traffic will
crowd Temple Canyon Road, Mariposa, 1st Street, and Highway 50.
Only$261,813 has been reserved for reclamation of the"affected area"when the mine shuts down. There is no
reserve set aside to mitigate significant problems should they occur during the mining process.
PLEASE deny this permit! The risks associated with the mining endeavor far outweigh whatever advantages
may be related to the mine.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
Hard Rock
County
Fremont
Enter one county only
Site Name
Dawson Gold Mine
Perm ittee/Operator Name
Zephyr Gold USA Ltd
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Are there supporting photos, maps, or documents you wish to upload?
Yes No
Upload Supporting Documents
Maximum of 5 files can be uploaded and each file size must be 10mb and under.
