It has shown no regard for
Canon City since it stopped communicating its plans with the community. All proceeds from the mine will leave
Canon City, and we'll be stuck with nothing but a hole in the ground, expensive maintenance costs, and an
environmental disaster waiting to happen.
FINANCIAL CONCERNS
Zephyr is not financially capable of operating the mine. They are only here to conduct the exploration and get
the necessary permits. Once approved, they will most likely sell their holdings to another, larger company,
sending all promises and reassurances out the window.
Jobs
Based on Zephyr's research, the mine would be operational for five or six years and employ approximately 20
people. The number is unlikely to rise above that because the new company will want to keep costs low.
Assuming otherwise would be a mistake.
Not all of the mining positions will be filled by local residents. Many workers will be brought in from outside the
region. And when the gold is gone, they'll leave too, taking their income and tax dollars back to wherever they
call home.
Tourism
The mine's economic benefit for Canon City and Fremont County is negligible and short-lived at best.
Meanwhile,we have a thriving eco-based tourism industry that supports thousands of local jobs every year.
Canon City residents and city officials have explicitly expressed their desire to build the local economy on
tourism, attracting people from all over the world to enjoy our unique outdoor opportunities.A full-scale mining
operation flies in the face of what this town wants for its future.
