operation. Also of concern is the proximity to the number of people living in the 458 households in Dawson
Ranch and how they will be affected by a mining operation in their backyard.
The mine and the chemicals needed to process the ore are upstream from the Arkansas River watershed.
Zephyr has stated that the impact on water levels and quality will be"insignificant."However, this claim has no
assurances. There would be some monitoring of water quality and water levels.Again, there are no assurances
that mine operations will curtail if depletion or contamination occurs. There are no water quality standards
specified in the permit and no specified actions of what will happen if those standards are not met.
Colorado Citizens Against Toxic Waste(CCAT)has advocated for 20 years for the safety of the environment
including our water resources for the citizens of Fremont County. In 1958 Cotter Corporation was allowed to
come into our community with promises of jobs and a place in the future of nuclear energy. The jobs came,
nuclear energy is still an unfulfilled promise but it is no doubt that the unfettered dumping process of the
company left the Lincoln Park neighborhood without the use of their well water. The Canon City Community is
also burdened with the stigma of a National Priority List designation(Superfund sites)primarily because of the
contamination of the groundwater under Lincoln Park with radioactive materials and other chemical
constituents.
Even with improved environmental regulations and better oversight of industrial operations such as mines, the
risk is too great to our water and our environment.
No economic gain in the short term can be justified by sacrificing so much of our future. People in decision-
making positions need to reflect the values Coloradans have in Colorado and not be seduced by the"pipe
dreams"of people who don't even live here.Zephyr,a Canadian company, (ZPHYF)is listed over the counter
and could be termed a"penny stock",defined as:"a common stock valued at less than one dollar, and therefore
highly speculative."
Please weigh carefully the short-term gain against the long-term endangerment of the water resources of
Fremont County, the irreplaceable wilderness environment, and the health and the"right to happiness and
enjoyment of life".
Sincerely,
Carol Dunn
Colorado Citizens Against Toxic Waste,CCAT
Co-Chair
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Fremont
Enter one county only
Site Name
Dawson Gold Mine
Perm ittee/Operator Name
Zephyr Gold USA Ltd
