But the County has evolved since then, developing more
sustainable industries that protect our precious natural resources.Zephyr Gold USA's mine application is an
unsustainable proposal and must be rejected. There are many reasons for this, but I'll focus on just one:the
threat to our water.
Water is the most precious resource on the planet-without it, no life can exist. It's more precious than any
mineral, including gold. Unfortunately, water is a primary ingredient in mining operations;vast amounts have
been used to extract desired metals from many places on Earth, leaving behind toxic waste, ruined landscapes,
and polluted water. Until recently, humans have taken water for granted, exploiting free access to it and using it
indiscriminately in the interest of profits for a few.Zephyr plans to use underground water to run their operation;
meanwhile the western states, including Colorado are now experiencing unprecedented drought and water
shortages. For the first time in its history, the mighty Colorado River-essential to the lives of more than 40
million people-is drying up. It makes absolutely no sense to allow a mining operation to use millions of gallons
every year to extract gold in a semi-desert landscape highly vulnerable to drought conditions.
In addition, chemicals are mixed with water in the mineral extraction process, creating a toxic stew deadly to
nearly all forms of life, including humans. Despite assurances from Zephyr that they will safely store chemicals
on-site and prevent polluted water from escaping into the greater environment, the sad reality is that no mining
operation anywhere in the world has been able to avoid accidental(or deliberate)spills.
There is no justification to allow this Canadian enterprise to set up a mining operation in Fremont County.Their
application should be rejected at the state level.
Sincerely,
Sydney Jacobs
Florence,CO
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
