I object to approval
of the permit for this mine for the following reasons:
1.The proposed mine is in close proximity to two areas in the Grape Creek watershed being considered for
possible wilderness designation. It would appear ludicrous to approve a mining operation this close to a
protected and environmentally sensitive area.
2. 1 am very concerned about the possible effects of the mining chemicals used in the gold extraction process
and how they might impact the ground water quality of the area let alone the quality of drainage water that
eventually makes it way into Grape Creek and the Arkansas River.Canon City derives it main drinking water
source from the Arkansas River.The proposed mine is located at a higher elevation than Grape Creek and the
Arkansas River.The potential for runoff of toxic chemicals through the ground water into these crucial drinking
water supplies is concerning. I have not seen any substantive proposal from Zephyr Gold USA on how this risk
will be prevented or even minimized.
3. Projects like this that are located in environmentally sensitive areas are required to provide an environmental
impact report when on public lands.This mining project,which as the potential to disrupt so many
environmental parameters,is apparently not required to file any sort of environmental impact report because it
is solely on private property. I find this absurd.The project impact on wildlife,ground water,air pollution,
erosion,and on outdoor recreational activities in the area cannot be ignored just because the project is on
private property.
4. If the permit is approved,then there will undoubtedly be further efforts to expand the mining onto other land
tracts in the area which will in turn further degrade the beauty and environmental quality of this area.
5. Fremont County and Canon City have focused on becoming an area for outdoor enthusiasts.This mining
project has the potential to impact this goal and negatively affect tourism in Fremont County.
6.The huge amount of water used for the mining process is also a concern. Drought and water shortages are
now a major threat with global warming,and any operation that has the potential to affect ground water supplies
and water quality has to be viewed in this context.
In summary,this wild and unspoiled area has the potential to be seriously impacted by a gold mine operation. I
do not think the mining permit should be approved. I think the area is best suited for other uses that don't have
the potential to seriously impact the local environment and that don't threaten the main water source for the
local community.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers,for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
I
