I am a shareholder on
Deweese Ditch. Deweese gets water from Grape Creek. In a good year we are allowed water only two days per
week. In poor years we get water only one day per week and, in particularly bad years, they are forced to close
early. I fear the demands of the Zephyr mine will strangle the needs of folks like myself:gardeners, truck
farmers, horse owners who maintain small pastures.
The proposed mine is upstream of the entire Arkansas River drainage from the Royal Gorge down.Any
hazardous material spill at the mine could affect hundreds of thousands of people living in Fremont, Pueblo,
Otero, Bent, and Prowers Counties and points east. One need only recall the Gold King Mine waste water spill
on August 5,2015 in Durango to know that"It can happen here and now". In that event, 3 million gallons of
highly toxic waste water were accidentally released into the Animas and San Juan River watershed. The
released devastated a wide swath of the Four Corners area.The Gold King Mine had been closed since 1923;
92 years before the accident. Five years after the spill water quality is still a concern on the Animas River. The
Zephyr mine will be a ticking time bomb for more than a century.
I urge you to reject this application for the sake of we who live here now and for the sake of those who will live
here 100 years hence.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
County
Fremont
Enter one county only
Site Name
Dawson Gold Mine
