TR-34 to Permit M-1977-342
Environmental Protection Plan
7.1.2. Designated Chemical Storage Facilities
Designated chemicals at the Henderson Mine site are limited to those located at the URAD WTP.
EPFs for these chemicals include enclosed buildings, tanks and silos. The ultimate emergency EPF
for these chemicals are the URAD treatment ponds, which are located downgradient of the WTP.
The specific EPFs for designated chemicals at the Mill are discussed below.
Mine EPF 2.1 — Quicklime Storage: Quicklime is used at the URAD WTP to precipitate metals.
Lime is stored in two 100 ton silos located west of the URAD WTP building. Slaked lime is then
fed to a 1,000 gallon lime slurry tank inside the WTP.
Effectiveness: Quicklime is non-viscous and is easily contained and cleaned-up. Secondary
containment is provided by the URAD treatment ponds and low-lying area. Any spills inside the
WTP will be contained by the floors sloping toward a sump system and secondary containment.
Monitoring: Chemical storage containers are routinely inspected in accordance with the SPCC
by Mine personnel to assess effectiveness and integrity of each EPF system.
Maintenance and/or updates to facilities, systems, equipment, or procedures are performed
as needed to be protective of the environment and to prevent releases.
Mine EPF 2.2—P812A Flocculent Storage: P812A flocculent is used at the URAD WTP to improve
settling of sludge in the clarifier. Bags of P812A are stored on a pallet inside the WTP building.
The raw, dry flocculent is added to a 500 gallon mix tank and then transferred to a second 500
gallon dosing tank inside the URAD WTP building.
Effectiveness: The flocculent mixing tank and storage tank are contained within one system as
an over/under tank system and sit within a secondary containment within the WTP building.
The URAD WTP building provides tertiary containment and is designed with floors sloping
toward a sump system and containment where it can be recycled back through the system.
Monitoring: Chemical storage containers are routinely inspected in accordance with the SPCC
by Mine personnel to assess effectiveness and integrity of each EPF system. The tanks are
equipped with level detectors and local alarms that warn of high tank levels.
Maintenance and/or updates to facilities, systems, equipment, or procedures are performed
as needed to be protective of the environment and to prevent releases.
Mine EPF 2.3—Sulfuric Acid Storage: Sulfuric acid is used at the URAD WTP to neutralize the pH
of effluent water. Sulfuric acid is stored in a 4,000 gallon tank located between the URAD WTP
building and the clarifier.
Effectiveness: Sulfuric acid is stored in a plastic, double walled tank. Spills would be contained
within the secondary containment and in the interstitial area between the two walls. Tertiary
containment is provided by the URAD treatment ponds and low-lying area.
Monitoring: Chemical storage containers are routinely inspected in accordance with the SPCC
by Mine personnel to assess effectiveness and integrity of each EPF system. The tanks are
equipped with level detectors and local alarms that warn of high tank levels or a leak.
Maintenance and/or updates to facilities, systems, equipment, or procedures are performed
as needed to be protective of the environment and to prevent releases.
Climax Molybdenum Company August,2021
Henderson Operations Page 19 of 45
