BENT COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
112 PERMIT APPLICATION
EXHIBIT H (Wildlife Information)
Bent Co State Pit
Colorado Parks &Wildlife has conducted a survey of the subject area and their detailed findings and
recommendations are enclosed herewith. The primary species of concern is Burrowing Owls (Athene
conicularia). The recommendation is to limit activities to times of the year outside their nesting period
of March 15 to October 31 if nesting sites (prairie dog burrows and other burrows) are found on site.
The other species of concern is the Swift Fox (Vulpes velox). CPW recommends pre-construction surveys
to identify den sites for avoidance. Surveys will be completed during daylight hours for den areas
followed up with night time spotlight searches in late summer(August or September) to confirm activity.
Earthmoving and screening will be primarily conducted between November 1 and March 14 of each
year. This will reduce the impact during the Burrowing Owl typical mating period. Mined materials will
be stockpiled during this time to allow access to road repair materials if needed during other times of
the year without ground and habitat disturbance.
Earthmoving for reclamation will also be conducted between November 1 and March 14 to avoid the
Burrowing Owl mating period. Prior to relocating the stored topsoil, the reclamation pile will be
examined for dens following the same procedure as with mining. Daylight surveys for den sites and night
time follow-up for activity confirmation.
When reclamation is complete, the affected area will be returned to the same use as the current use,
rangeland.
