To address the potential for erosion during reclamation, contour furrows will
be shaped into the slope at 50 vertical foot intervals down the face of the slope,
perpendicular to the slope. The contour furrows will be approximately 20 ft. long
and spaced approximately 50 ft. apart.
Seeding will occur between October 1 and April 30 with the seed mix
presented in Table 1. Seed will be drilled at the rate of 10.4 pounds per acre,
mulched with certified weed free straw, two tons per acre, and tracked into place
with a dozer. Fertilizer was not recommended by Soil Conservation District or
Colorado Department of Wildlife. In the event an agency recommends a fertilizer
prior to or during reclamation, the Division will be notified and the applicant will
comply with the recommendation.
Table 1: Jefferson Soil Conservation District recommended seed mix.
Common Name & Variety PLS/acre
Western wheat grass 4.0
Big bluestem 2.2
Little bluestem 1.05
Sideoats grama 1.35
Yellow indian rass 1.5
Blue grama 0.3
Total 10.4
Shrubs will also be planted during reclamation. 120 mountain mahogany
shrubs of 5-gallon minimum size, will be planted in clusters along the reclaimed
slopes and stockpile areas. Clusters will contain approximately 10 shrubs and will be
spaced aesthetically pleasingly along the seeded area.
The reclaimed slopes will be monitored regularly for vegetation success or
erosion impacts. Additional erosion control measures will be implemented if
necessary. Weed control will be performed if the weed density inhibits the
establishment of grasses or if noxious weeds appear in the reclaimed area.
