72- Midway- Cascajo complex, 10 to 40 percent slopes. This map unit is on moderately <br /> sloping to steep ridges, knobs, hills, and edges of fan terraces deeply dissected by <br /> streams. The native vegetation is mainly grasses, cactus, and scattered pinon and <br /> juniper. Elevation is 5,300 to 6,500 feet. The average annual precipitation is 12 to 15 <br /> inches, the average annual air temperature is 50 to S3 degrees F, and the average frost- <br /> free period is 150 to 165 days. This unit is about 60 percent Midway soil and about 20 <br /> percent Cascajo soil. The midway soil occurs mainly on steeper side slopes. The Cascajo <br /> soil occurs mainly on knobs and hills and along crests of terrace edges. Included in this <br /> unit is about 10 percent Kim loam on terraces, tops of hills, and foot slopes. Also, <br /> included are small areas of shale outcrop on steeper side slopes and about 10 percent <br /> soils shallow or moderately deep to shale bedrock and otherwise similar to the Cascajo <br /> soil. The Midway soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum derived <br /> dominantly from shale. Slope is 15 to 40 percent. Typically, the surface layer is grayish <br /> brown very gravelly clay loam about 3 inches thick. The upper 4 inches of the <br /> underlying material is clay. The lower part to a depth of 15 inches. The soil is mildly <br /> alkaline to a depth of 7 inches and moderately alkaline below that depth. Permeability <br /> of the Midway soil is slow. Available water capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth <br /> is 10 to 20 inches. Runoff is rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is high. The Cascajo <br /> soil is deep and excessively drained. It formed in gravelly and sandy alluvium. Slope is <br /> 10 to 40 percent. Typically, the surface layer is very dark grayish brown very gravelly <br /> sandy loam about 6 inches thick. The upper 15 inches of the underlying material is <br /> extremely cobbly sandy loam. The lower part to a depth of 60 inches is extremely <br /> cobbly sand. The soil is moderately alkaline. A high content of accumulated calcium <br /> carbonate is between depths of 6 and 21 inches. Permeability of the Cascajo soil is <br /> moderately rapid to rapid. Available water capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 60 <br /> inches or more. Runoff is medium to very high, and the hazard of water erosion is <br /> moderate to very high. This unit is used for rangeland. The potential plant community <br /> on this unit is mainly sideoats grama, blue grama, need Ieandthread, Indian ricegrass, <br /> and little bluestem. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about 800 <br /> pounds per acre. If the condition of the range deteriorates, red threeawn and annual <br /> forbs increase. This unit is poorly suited to homesite development. The main limitations <br /> are shallow depth to shale bedrock and steepness of slope. This map unit is in capability <br /> subclass Vlle, non-irrigated. It is in the Gravel Breaks#64 range site. <br /> 83- Penrose-Minnequa complex, 2 to 25 percent slopes. This map unit is on ridges, <br /> plains, and short breaks. The native vegetation is mainly grasses. Elevation is 5,000 to <br /> 5,400 feet. The average annual precipitation is 11 to 13 inches, the average annual air <br /> temperature is 50 to 53-degree F, and the average frost-free period is 1S0 to 170 days. <br /> This unit is about 45 percent Penrose soil and 40 percent Minnequa soil. The Penrose <br /> soil is mainly on ridges, breaks, and steeper areas. Scattered juniper trees are common <br />
