FLSmidth USA, Inc.
7158 S FLSmidth Drive • Midvale • UT 84047-5559 • USA M , DT H
Feed Input
Cylinder --
C.
Ccrtrcller
FI:
Feet
FriF Punt
Flcc_I=_rh
MEN
iF
t
Figure 1: FLSmidth Testing Setup - Continuous Fill Test
3.5 Mud Rheology
Thickened underflow from the continuous fill test allows for the determination of underflow
rheology necessary for proper underflow management and rake motor selection. Process
liquor is used to dilute the thickened underflow sample through a series of solids
concentrations to measure yield stress as a function of solids concentration.
Underflow samples from the Dynamic tests were retained for rheological analysis. Mud
rheology can be the limiting factor in the solids concentration that is discharged from a
Paste thickener. Mud rheology data was obtained on the slurry samples over a range of
solids densities/solids concentration using a Haake VT550 Vane Viscometer and a
specialized "DOE 25x25 vane", which can be seen in Figure 2. The slurry yield stress, the
force required to produce movement from a stationery bed is measured and correlated with
underflow solids concentration. This yield stress is a function of solids content (the slurry is
thus thickened to a range of solids concentration), polymer type, polymer dosage, particle
size and the mineralogy of the particles.
Page 1 7
