There are no trees or tall shrubs and with
sandy soils covering a vast majority of the proposed affected land there is not adequate
opportunity for many forms of vegetation to grow. This, in part, is due to the limited water
holding capacity.
Average annual production for cropland and rangeland is dependent on soil type,
environmental and climatological factors. The reclaimed land will be non-irrigated, therefore
the crop types that can be utilized are more limited. Based on NRCS data the local soils of sandy
loam or loamy sand that have less than 3%slopes have the capacity to yield approximately 17.5
Bu of wheat per acre per year when non irrigated. Similarly, barley is estimated to yield 14.4-
21.25 Bu per acre when non irrigated. Without the addition of an irrigation system, the
combination of climatological factors such as annual rainfall and the low holding capacity, as it
relates to water, of the sandy soils do not make the land an attractive location to grow hay or
alfalfa. The carrying capacity for rangeland is estimated to be 50 animal use months. The
carrying capacity estimate based on the average forage production of the region under normal
climatic conditions, which is .43 AUM/Acre.
The principal forb located on the proposed affected lands is classified as the Heterotheca
villosa, or hairy goldenaster. The hairy goldenaster is adapted to occupying the sandy soils of
the site (Resources, 1998) and is estimated to cover approximately 80 acres of land, all located
in the area exhibited as being Truckton Loamy Sand. The 23 acres previously affected lands
were reclaimed following the end of operations with a Dryland pasture seed mix which has
established itself very well since the affected area has been reclaimed.
