Page 12
3. PROJECT AREA DESCRIPTION
The proposed MW -1 and MW -2 sites would be located in a Rocky Mountain Gambel Oak -Mixed
Montane Shrubland vegetation community. These areas were dominated by Gambel's oak (Quercus
gombelii), Indian ricegrass (Achnatherum hymenoides), lupine (Lupinus sp.), smooth brome (Bromus
inermis), sweetclover (Melilotus officinolis), and Utah serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis). These areas
also contain a minor component of alderleaf mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus), beardtongue
(Penstemon sp.), Bigelow sage (Artemisia bigelovii), cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), mullein (Verbascum
sp.), and wild crab apple (Peraphyllum ramosissimum).
The proposed MW -1 site would be situated at an elevation of approximately 8,526 feet with a ground
cover of between 50 and 60 percent. The proposed MW -1 site is situated adjacent to a two -track road in
a small vegetated clearing on public lands managed by the BLM/TRFO. The proposed MW -2 site would
be situated at an elevation of approximately 7,709 feet in a previously disturbed area where ground
cover varied from 10 to 30 percent. The proposed MW -2 site is situated at the intersection of two two -
track roads in mostly disturbed habitat on Colorado State Trust land. No surface water resources were
observed within the proposed MW -1 or MW -2 sites. Site drainage at the proposed MW -1 site would
flow southwest into East Alkali Gulch, containing an ephemeral watercourse. Site drainage at the
proposed MW -2 site would flow south into Hay Gulch, containing an ephemeral watercourse.
Photograph 3-1.
