Introduction
The Bowie No. 2 Mine was constructed and opened by Bowie Resources Limited
during the spring and summer of 1997 with coal production and development
beginning on August 15, 1997. The mine began longwall production during
November 1999 and currently produces coal at the rate of about 5 million tons
per year.
There is an active coal mine waste disposal area (Permit Volume IV) that was
sized to accept miscellaneous roof fall material and other minor amounts of high
ash coal encountered in the mine. Another active coal mine waste disposal area
(Gob Pile #2, Permit Volume IX) was sized to handle refuse from the preparation
plant. This second coal mine disposal area is nearly at full capacity.
A third coal mine waste disposal area (Gob Pile #3) has been designed to handle
refuse from the preparation plant. The disposal area is located south of the
existing disposal area in the field near the unit train loadout. The new disposal
area is to have a capacity of about 750,000 cubic yards. There is a coverfill pile,
topsoil stockpile, diversion ditches, collection ditches and a modified sediment
pond associated with the new disposal area.
The facility is located, as shown on Map 15-1 & 3, in the old 'Bowie Orchard'. The
Bowie No. 2 Mine has not generated a significant amount of coal mine waste in
the past few years, however the preparation plant generated significant
quantities. The coal mine waste generated from the operation during the initial
five year life of gob pile #2 was estimated to be about 1,000,000 cubic yards.
Volume XI
TR-118 -1 - 04/19
