Non -Petroleum Wastes:
The non -petroleum waste products such as scrap lumber, scrap concrete, unsalvageable scrap
Iron, and office trash are hauled to the pits. Salvageable scrap iron, including old mining equip-
ment, is sold to local scrap dealers.
In-shu coal left In the pits Is usually in the form of un -mined seams at ph ends. The pits are all
backfilled as part of the reclamation program. Any un -mined coal Is therefore covered with 20 to
150 feet or more of material. Any coal lost along the ribs would also be covered with at least 20
feet of material.
4.3.2.3 Control of Impacts
The nature of the wastes generated at the mine she and disposed of In the pits naturally minimizes
many environmental Impacts. Windblown debris Is not a problem because most of the wastes are
lumber and tires. Any office trash disposed of In the pits will be covered sufficiently to prevent the
wind from scattering h. Neither wood, rubber, nor paper will produce significant quantities of
methane gas In this situation. They are resistant to decay and will be buried deep enough that
methane production will be minimal. The materials are Insoluble In water and therefore present no
leachate or runoff problems. The wastes would generally not provide a food source for animals
• and are burled deep enough that Insects and rodents will not be attracted to the area.
The relatively small amounts of waste disposed of In the pits over a large area precludes causing
subsidence problems. Although the wastes are all flammable, there will be no hot ashes or other
hot waste disposed of, so there
REVISED IXV' 0 S 'B9
•
4-20 REVISION
APPROVED
DATE. 5-2-10
R -q9
