ABA
static test procedures determine acid generation potential (AGP) from total sulfur (S) content using the
following equation:
AGP= 31.25 x percent S
with AGP expressed in kilograms calcium carbonate per ton (kg CaCO3/ton) and assuming two moles of
acid will be produced from each mole of sulfur. Neutralization Potential (NP) is determined using a 24-hour
contact time acid digestion at ambient temperatures and is also expressed in kg CaCO3/ton. Net
Neutralization Potential (NNP) is determined by subtracting AGP from NP and can be used to classify a
sample as potentially acid generating (PAG) or non-PAG. In general, samples with NNP values < -20 kg
CaCO3/ton are likely to form acid (PAG)while samples with NNP > 20 kg CaCO3/ton are not likely to form
acid (non-PAG). Samples with NNP values between -20 and 20 kg CaCO3/ton may or may not generate
acid (uncertain).
In the TCLP test (EPA method 1311), the pH of the sample material is first established, and then
leached with an acetic acid/sodium hydroxide solution at a 1:20 mix of sample to solvent. The leachate
mixture is sealed in an extraction vessel for general analytes, or possibly pressure sealed as in zero-
headspace extractions (ZHE) and tumbled for 18 hours to simulate an extended leaching time in the
ground. The sample is then filtered so that only the solution (not the sample) remains and the leachate
is then analyzed for TCLP metals analyses (arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury,
selenium, and silver).
January 14,2021
DV-21-0024 3 of 6
