PERMIT#:PF.Id
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: SJM
INSPECTION DATE: October 6,2020
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted in response to an inquiry about a possible coal mine fire or uranium mine
located in Delta County. The site lies approximately 8 miles northeast of Hotchkiss, Colorado at the end
Runzel Gulch Road. Address is 14299 Runzel Gulch Road. The Division was contacted on October 2, 2020 about
a possible operation with various gases emanating from the surface. The site was not active during the
inspection. Photos of the area accompany this report to illustrate the current site conditions. Division Staff on
the inspection included Tara Tafi from the Inactive Mines Program and Stephanie Mitchell with the Active
Mines Program.
Staff arrived on site at 11:00 am Tuesday, October 6, 2020. After accessing the property through a gate, we
observed an area that appeared to have a recent burn near the road, the rest of the area to the north was
evident of a forest fire many years ago. Various debris was scatted all throughout the property, including
restaurant equipment, a chicken coop, drill casing, trash and vehicles. A shed and greenhouse were on the
property. It appears that there was not a home or residence on the property.
Tara Tafi measured Carbon Monoxide (CO), Hydrogen Sulfide (h2s) and Methane gas levels at various locations
on the property and all were at zero (0).
No Subsidence was evident, indicative of a coal seam fire.
A neighbor, by the name of John Young, whose address is 14295 Runzel Gulch approached Division Staff on a
UTV and was carrying a unconcealed weapon. He informed us that the recent burn area was started by the
current property owner, Beau Burger. He notified us that the property was under foreclosure and was going to
sale on December 9, 2020. This information was confirmed by Delta County Assessor and Treasurer. At that
time, Division Staff left the property for safety concerns.
The Division has determined that it does not appear there is a coal seam fire present or uranium in the area.
All responses to this report should be directed to Stephanie Mitchell at the Division of Reclamation, Mining
and Safety at 1313 Sherman Street, Room 215, Denver, CO 80203, by phone at 303.866.3567 ext 8180 or by
email at stephanie.mitchell@state.co.us
