Mulch should be applied to the reseeded area to help moderate soil <br /> temperatures, to Improve soil moisture absorption, and to improve soil <br /> holding capacity of moisture. Grass hay or cereal grain straw that is <br /> free of weed seeds is recommended for mulch. Apply 4,000 pounds of <br /> mulch per acre to the soil surface. At least half of the material should <br /> be ten Inches or more In length. Do not use fine materials. The mulch <br /> should be anchored either with commercial netting products (on <br /> slopes steeper than 3:1) or mechanically. Mechanical anchoring can <br /> be accomplished using a heavy disk implement with dull blades to <br /> punch the mulch into the soil two to three inches deep. Crimping <br /> should not sever the mulch. <br /> Do not mulch when wind velocities exceed fifteen miles per hour. <br /> Well-cured feedlot or barnyard manure may also be used as a <br /> combination mulch/organic matter and nutrient source for the seeded <br /> area. Recommended application rate is at least twenty tons per acre, <br /> making sure it is evenly spread over the area. The manure must be of <br /> a type that contains at least 60%(by weight) heavy chunks of five <br /> inches or more in diameter. Granular or powdery manure will not <br /> meet specifications. Repeated applications of manure for fertilization <br /> purposes are not recommended due to potential salt accumulation. <br /> S.) Supplemental water, if available, should be provided during the first <br /> two growing seasons to insure seeding success. Water should be <br /> applied at one-week intervals at a rate of 0.75 to 1.00 inches per <br /> application. The irrigations should begin no later than May 1st and <br /> continue until late July. Additional irrigations after July can be at the <br /> discretion of the party responsible for reclamation. During the second <br /> growing season, enough supplemental water should be applied so that <br /> when combined with natural precipitation, two inches of moisture is <br /> received per month during May, June and July. After July of the <br /> second year, supplemental irrigations can be discontinued. <br /> 9.) All tillage, seeding, and crimping operations should be performed <br /> across the slope when practical. <br /> The area should be protected from grazing and trampling until the <br /> seeding is well established. Normally at least two years of protection <br /> is needed. <br />
