Photo that shows plan view of northern portion of South Quarry, with circled localized
kinematic failures that are interpreted to have formed on adversely oriented foliations. The crown
of these failures nearly extends to the overlying bench and could feasibly result in a multi-bench
failure.
8.2 Rock Cut Highwall Performance Monitoring
Recommendations
Monitoring the mine highwalls is a critical step in recognizing and reducing the potential for
both small and large-scale failures. Aggregate Industries currently follows a monitoring plan
for the South Quarry that utilizes control points fixed to concrete-filled 55-gallon drums and
visual monitoring program. This plan should continue to be followed, and GEI recommends
supplementing this plan with an annual program that includes quarry face monitoring by
LiDAR (N, E and El.) scans of the rock face and 55-gallon drum monuments or other laser
scanning method to detect changes in the highwall surface. We do annual LiDAR on Ash
stacks, slag stacks, landfills and tailing dam's surfaces to not annual changes.
42
Aggregate Industries—Morrison Quarry GEI Consultants, Inc.
AM-07 Geotechnical Stability Exhibit November 2020
