4.3 2018 Laboratory Analyses
Laboratory test assignments on selected samples collected by Al in 2018 were based on
GEI's review of rock cores and included direct shear tests on natural joints and saw cut
samples and uniaxial or unconfined compressive strength (UCS; per ASTM D7012, method
Q. A summary of the test results is presented in Table 4-2 and Table 4-3, and laboratory
reports are included in Appendix A.2.
The reported friction angle for granitic gneiss and biotite gneiss was between 21° and 34' for
tests on natural fractures, and the reported friction angle for sillimanitic gneiss was between
16' and 20°. The UCS was between 3,600 and 33,000 lbs/in2 (psi) for the granitic and
biotite gneiss. The reported friction angle for sillimanitic gneiss was between 16' and 26' for
test on natural fractures and the UCS was between 5,300 and 8,400 psi.
Table 4-2. 2018 Subsurface Explorations: Direct Shear Test Results
Normal Shear Friction Apparent
Borehole Sample Sample Joint Stress Stress angle,cp Cohesion,
ID,, Number Depth(ft) Material Type (psi) (psi) (degrees) c(psi)
Natural 70 58
M-2-18 1 154-155.3 Granitic Gneiss Fracture 140 100 33.9 8.9
280 198.3
Natural 70 51.9
M-2-18 5 56-57 Biotite Gneiss 140 65.8 30.8 0
Fracture 280 173.1
Natural 70 50.7
M-5-18 7 129-129.5 Sillimanitic Gneiss Fracture 140 74.4 19.6 25.4
280 125.1
Natural 70 65.2
M-4-18 9 173-174 Granitic Gneiss Fracture 140 107.7 21.3 44
280 150.1
Natural 70 56.2
M-4-18 11 193-194.5 Granitic Gneiss Fracture 140 124.3 28.1 31.1
(Healed) 280 174.6
Natural 150 162.8
M-3-18 12 282-283.5 Sillimanitic Gneiss Fracture 300 204.3 15.9 119.7
600 290.5
Natural 150 231
M-3-18 13 362-364 Sillimanitic Gneiss Fracture 300 256.4 25.8 139.6
600 439.2
16
Aggregate Industries-Morrison Quarry GEI Consultants, Inc.
AM-07 Geotechnical Stability Exhibit November 2020
