Outcrop of sillimanitic gneiss with banding. <br /> Mafic Dikes <br /> The mafic dikes are observed in the exposed highwalls within the South and Central Quarry <br /> and are evident in rock cores obtained during drilling. Compositional information is not <br /> available for the mafic dikes but field classifications indicate this unit is rich is iron and <br /> magnesium. The mafic dikes are generally near vertical, about 4 to 6 feet in width,primarily <br /> fine grained, and are linearly continuous across much of the site. The dikes are darker <br /> colored due to mafic minerals being rich in magnesium and iron, and are variable in their <br /> strength and hardness, which ranges from soft to hard(H3 to 1­16). The mafic dikes can be <br /> more weathered than the adjacent bedrock and tend to cross-cut foliation.
