SITES
5MF9889 (TM-01)
This newly recorded historic inscription site lies on the northern side of the Williams
Fork Mountains and on the western side of north -trending Johnson Gulch, east of the Yampa
River. Specifically, it is situated on the southern side of a west -trending finger ridge and on the
northern side of the head of a north/northwest-trending intermittent drainage. Measuring about
10-x-8-m, the site is on state-owned land. It consists of historic inscriptions on a prominent
isolated globular sandstone hoodoo supported by a narrow base that measures 80 cm in diameter.
The hoodoo expands to over 4 in in diameter near its middle and is roughly 4 m high (Figure 4).
Gravelly coarse sand with no vegetation surrounds the base of the feature. An unmodified
sandstone boulder lies to its immediate north. Vegetation is a sagebrush shrubland, with sage,
rabbitbrush, snakeweed, prickly pear, grasses, and forbs. Sediment is brown sand measuring an
estimated 50 cm deep as shown by rodent holes; it is a mix of residuum and aeolian deposits.
Gravels and cobbles are exposed in eroded areas. The virtual datum is the sandstone hoodoo.
Visibility on and around the site was very good at roughly 80 percent.
Figure 4.
