Shrub production will not be collected. Values will be in g/m2, lbs/ac and kg/ha.
Species List. A list of all species observed during sampling will be developed. Common names will be
included, as will lifeform, origin, and longevity. The initial species list -will be upgraded in subsequent
monitoring efforts.
Sampling Methodologies. The following defines the general methodologies to be used in sampling.
Cover. Cover will be measured by the point -intercept method. The point -intercept transact will be at
least 25 meters long with at least 50 points taken. Stratified and non -stratified vegetation cover will be
measured.
Production. Production data will be collected by the harvest method. All herbaceous vegetation
occurring within the vertical projection of a 1/2m2-1m2 plot will be clipped and bagged. The samples
will be oven dried and weighed to the nearest tenth of a gram.
Species Frequency. The frequency of species occurrence in samples Itransects) will be determined by
noting the species encountered alone and next to transect lines, even though the species is not hit.
Species List. The species list will be developed from any spring flora investigations and from
information gathered during peak growing season sampling. 0
Sampling Intensity. A minimum of one (1) sample for each ten (10) acres of reclaimed area will be
taken or until sample adequacy is achieved. Generally, at least 15 samples are collected unless the
sampled unit is small. Sampling locations will generally be established through the,use of random point
selection. This method may be modified when it becomes apparent that a more even distribution or
allocation of sampling points would be desirable, particularly if the reclamation block is split into a
number into a number of small subunits. Since the monitoring data is intended for evaluation of
reclamation methods and performance of revegetated stands, and not for strict statistical analysis, this
"allocation" method of sample point selection is adequate. A sampling point is that location in the
study area where the production or cover measurements are collected.
E
10 Revised 05/01
