August 12, 2020 C-1981-038/Bowie No. I Mine RDZ
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
Good stands of vegetation were seen at the reclaimed area of the East Mine (including the RDA, reclaimed ponds,
and the Old Waste Disposal Area), the ROM and Timber Storage areas, and the West Mine.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
The following observations were made regarding the vegetation at the ROM and Timber Storage Areas (not
including the reclaimed pond area):
• The cover looks good in all areas.
• The grasses that are predominate appear to be cool season perennials; thickspike wheatgrass was seen in
abundance.
• The area contains large quantities of curlycup gumweed and cicer milkvetch.
• Many shrubs were observed, including mountain mahogany and rabbitbrush.
Within the reclaimed pond area at the ROM Storage Area (which was more recently reclaimed than the rest of the
ROM area), the species that are dominate include desert alyssum and sage. Grasses are sparse compared to the
larger ROM area. Several thistle plants were observed at the pond area, but they are brown and appear to have
been sprayed by BRL.
Weeds were not found in large quantities. Some bindweed was seen along the road at the East Mine. Plants that
appear to be perennial pepperweed (a B list noxious weed) was seen near the top of the East Mine (along the road)
and at the loadout (by the substation). These should be sprayed, or BRL should explain if the Division has
identified these plants improperly.
SLIDES and DAMAGE - Rule 4.12:
No slides or other damage were seen at any reclaimed areas.
SIGNS AND MARKERS — Rule 4.02:
Mine identification signs were seen at the East Mine entrance, the loadout entrance, and in other locations.
Disturbance boundary markers were seen in several locations, including at the upper portion of the East Mine.
OFFSITE SUPPORT FACILIITES - Rule 4.04,4.28:
No problems were seen with the Coal Storage Area by the highway or with the loadout, except for the weed
mentioned in the REVEGETATION section.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 1
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 4 of 10
