The existing sediment pond at the southern border of the original permit area will remain after mining
as well as the planned two additional ponds that will be excavated immediately north of the existing
pond. The excavation of the sediment ponds will result in a 3:1 maximum slope from edge of pond to
interior of pond structures. Weirs will be used to direct collected water from pond 3 to pond 2 and
pond 2 to pond 1 as well draining pond 1 directed to Eight Mile Creek drainage. The sediment ponds will
allow for collection of potentially sediment laden surface run off for decantation prior to release by
percolation into the underlying shale or by flow from the weirs. The pond currently in use for the past
forty years of pit operation has never over-filled and released water via the weir device. As time passes
and the effectiveness of the second sediment pond can be determined given the expansion of disturbed
acreage, the necessity of the third pond will be considered.
There are no waste dumps, underground mine openings, or other sediment control structures on site or
planned for the site. Surface flow will be directed towards the existing sediment pond area via shallow
ditches flanking access roads to the pit area. These ditches will be minimally cut to near access road
elevation to direct surface run-off towards the sediment pond area. After re-vegetation has shown to
be successful, all access roads into the proposed additional mining acreage will be ripped, seeded and
mulched and all drainage ditches to control run-off along the temporary access road will be removed
prior to seeding.
