(WWL), as agent for Occidental Oil Shale, Inc. (OOSI),has received the
laboratory analytical results for a soil sample collected at the location of the retort mine water spill that
occurred on May 26t,2020,near Logan Wash Mine(Permit No.M-1977-424).Both the U.S.Bureau of
Land Management(BLM)and the Colorado Division of Reclamation,Mining and Safety(DRMS)were
notified by phone of this spill and formally by letter dated June 8t, 2020. DRMS conducted an onsite
inspection of the spill area on June 18t,2020.
Background
As you may recall, retort water that originates at the mine is conveyed to the Evaporation Pond by way
of a buried 4-to 6-inch polyvinyl chloride(PVC)pipe, which can be accessed by a number of vaults with
cast iron manhole covers. The spill occurred at Manhole 10 (MH-10) as a result of a plug of sediment
and sludge at that location.Retort water spilled from the manhole cover and flowed down the bar ditch
on the south side of Logan Wash Road. The retort valve at the mine was shut-in soon after the leak was
found and the sediment/sludge plug at MH-10 was removed by vac-truck methods; the material was
disposed of properly at the Greenleaf Environmental Services facility in De Beque, Colorado. Soils
potentially impacted by the spill were limited to within the existing bar ditch; an unvegetated area
approximately 280 feet long by 1 to 2 feet wide was wetted by the retort water.
A soil sample of the wetted soils was obtained by collecting several subsamples along the flow path in
the ditch and compositing the samples into one sample that was submitted to the analytical laboratory for
chemical analysis. The laboratory used was ALS Environmental, located in Holland,Michigan. This lab
has been used in the past for analysis of soil samples collected at the mine facilities.
