area standard thereafter in the process is treated as a technical standard (i.e. without confidence limits)
and one-sample t-testing is used.
HYPOTHESIS TESTING APPROACHES
For formal hypothesis testing relative to Phase II Bond Release the following procedures were followed:
Cover and Production
Phase II Revegetation success for cover will be demonstrated by one of following statistical approaches.
1) If sample adequacy has been achieved (minimum of 15 samples) in the BRB and the reference
area(s), and the reclaimed area mean allowable herbaceous cover is above 90% of the weighted
reference area-derived standard, all criteria are met for a direct comparison and revegetation
would be deemed successful (CDMG 2005 revised rule, 4.15.11 (2)(a)).
2) If the mean allowable herbaceous cover of the reclaimed area above 90% of the weighted
reference area-derived standard, and sample adequacy was not met for the reference area(s)
and/or BRB (minimum of 30 samples, technical standards not subject to sample adequacy), then
the hypothesis of reclamation success would be tested using a parametric test of the "reverse"
null hypothesis. This would be conducted using the following expression (CDMG 2005 revised
rule, 4.15.11 (2)(c)):
tc = x — Q
S-
a
Where:
t = Bond Release Block 1 Sample Mean
Q = 90% of Standard
S_ = Standard error of mean [s/Nln]
S = Sample standard deviation
n = Sample size
tc = Calculated t value
tt = Table t value (alpha = 0.2)
The null hypothesis being tested would be that the bond release block mean (µ)was less than or equal to
90% of the standard, stated as Ho: µ<_ Q. If tc was greater than the 1-tailed t table value for alpha error
6
