Privileged and Confidential—Attorney Client Communication Geosyntee
consultants
aerobic wetland treatment near the pond effluent. Additional treatment may also
be added upstream of MWP or within the pond to improve treatment
performance (this may include the installation of chemical feed systems).
Supplemental feed systems are also an option for the back end of the MWP to
enhance the performance of downstream biological treatment systems.
• Pond#2: the existing bioreactor system will be removed and replaced with
sulfate reducing bioreactor(SRB) media. The pond will be enlarged as part of
the reconstruction.
• Pond#3: the existing stormwater pond will be converted to an additional
biological treatment step for the new water treatment system. The pond will be
enlarged as part of the reconstruction. A new, permitted Outfall 002A will be
constructed at the end of Pond#3 for discharge into Sneffels Creek.
Using this information, a conceptual passive hybrid treatment pilot system was
constructed based on the process flow diagram presented in Figure 2. The treatment
system includes multiple passive treatment technologies, along with a chemical
treatment backup for startup, upset conditions, and/or high flow conditions that may
stress the biological systems.
Potential
Injections
(pH adjustment,
Coagulant organic carbon.
Addition trace nutrients)
Portal Mine Water Transition Pond#2 Pond#3
Aerobic Anaerobic --k Difels a to
Water Pond Wetland Bioreactor Wetland Sneffels Creek
Figure 2:Process Flow Diagram
Bench-scale and pilot-scale tests were developed to support the design of the full-scale
system.
