Fall 2019 Subsidence and Geologic Field Observations
Southern Panels Mining Area
Previously observed differential settlement cracks on the E8-5 MVB pad were still present but
showed continued signs of weathering and healing. No new subsidence features were observed
during our fall 2019 field visit.
During our spring 2019 field visit, the E-seam longwall mining face was located immediately west
of the E8-5 MVB pad. Observations made at the other MVB pads along the remainder of the
traverse (i.e., E8-6 through E8-8) represented baseline visits because the longwall face had not
passed beneath this area. Differential settlement cracks were observed along the road and on the
largest fill portions of the MVB E8-6 pad (Location 3) and MVB E8-7 pad (Location 4). Also
noted was a small slump on the north side of the MVB E8-8 pad that included a large boulder
(Location 5).
Observations made during our fall 2019 field visit at these locations found that there had been
some changes on or near the pads as discussed below. The most significant observed changes
were a parallel series of subsidence cracks located along the road near the fork leading to the E8-
7 and E8-8 pads (Location 6). Details associated with Locations 3 through 6 are provided below.
4.5.1 Location 3
Differential settlement cracks were observed during our spring 2019 field visit along the southern
edge of the MVB E8-6 pad where the largest portion of fill had been placed during pad construction
(Figure 6). These observations pre-dated longwall mining beneath the area. Observations made
during the fall 2019, after longwall mining had occurred, found that the differential settlement
cracks were somewhat widened and lengthened but in the same locations(Figure 7). No additional
subsidence features were observed on the MVB E8-6 pad.
4.5.2 Location 4
Some differential settlement cracks were observed on the MVB E8-7 pad during our spring 2019
field visit(Figure 8) and prior to mining beneath the site (Figure 8). While still present during our
fall 2019 field visit, additional cracks were observed on the pad near the MVB wellhead (Figures
9 and 10). These cracks are subsidence related as they appeared after mining had passed through
the area and have an orientation perpendicular to the differential settlement cracks. The maximum
dimension observed at these various crack locations was 1 inch in width and 0.5 inch in depth.
831-032.910 Wright Water Engineers, Inc. Page 17
February 2020
