Ed
Ogrodny of Mountain Coal Company(MCC) accompanied the inspection. The weather was clear and dry,but
with new snow on the ground. The mine was active.
GENERAL MINE PLAN COMPLIANCE:
The longwall had mined in the LWSS1 panel, to between cross-cuts 27 and 26 on the LWSS1 headgate.
Development mining in the LWSS2 headgate was at around cross-cut 5, and on the Sunset Mains South at around
cross-cut 27.
PROCESSING WASTE/COAL MINE WASTE PILES—Rule 4.10 and 4.11
Drainage Control; Surface Stabilization; Placement:
Processing waste was being generated from the prep plant at the time of the inspection, and was being
transported to the RPEE. Material was not being spread or worked over on the RPEE during the inspection. The
surface of the pile was sloped so as to ensure positive drainage. The weather was rapidly warming at the time of
the inspection, and the material at the front of the pile had deep muddy ruts from the haul trucks. Melting snow
was running off the pile, through the culvert as designed. Some material had built up at the inlet to the culvert,
although it was not clear whether it was ice or sediment. There was plenty of capacity through the culvert at the
time of the inspection, however this area should be monitored closely during the spring runoff.
ROADS—Rule 4.03
Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.032(3), Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.032(4), Surfacing and Maintenance4.03.1(5) and
(6)/4.032(5)and(6), Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.032(7):
The haul road to the RPEE was in relatively good shape for most of its length considering the heavy truck
traffic and the warming temperatures. Short sections (at the bottom, near the RPE, and on the recently graded
section near the top)were softer and significant ruts had begun to form, however the road was passable in a light
truck. Ruts had also begun to form on the hairpins.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 6
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 2 of 8
