PERMIT#: M-1987-027
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE:February 12,2020
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection conducted by Eric Scott of the Division of Reclamation Mining and
Safety (DRMS) of the Hardship Lode Quarry, a 55 acre, 112c permit operated by Colorado Quarries Inc.
Permittee representative Aaron Tezak accompanied DRMS during the inspection. The Hardship Lode Quarry
is located approximately 1.5 miles NNE of the town of Silvercliff, and a portion of the mineral rights to the site
are owned by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Only about 12 acres within the north-central area of
the permit have been disturbed to date. The permit is mined as needed for landscaping material and road
base and the approved post mining land use is rangeland.
The site identification sign and boundary markers were observed during the inspection (photo 1). The mine
was inactive at the time of the inspection. There were stockpiles of crushed material located on site that the
operator utilizes when needed (photo 2). The excavated area on the north side of the disturbance has been
left at a slope of 2.5:1 to 3:1 H:V and appears stable without excessive erosion.
Due to the limited area of disturbance and the fact that the mine is excavating at a near 3:1 slope, the existing
bond of$69,000 should be adequate to reclaim the site if needed.
As noted on the first page of this report, the only issue noted during this inspection was the presence of a
significant amount of knapweed within the disturbed area of the permit (photos 3-4). As stated in the
corrective actions requirement, Colorado Quarries will need to develop and implement an approved weed
control plan and provide proof to the Division that this has been done.
If a weed control plan is not already in place, the operator shall develop a weed control and management plan
in accordance with Section 3.1.10 (6) of the Rule. This plan should be developed in consultation with the
county extension agency, or weed control district office and should include specific control measures to be
applied, a schedule for when control measures will be applied and a post-treatment monitoring plan. This
weed control plan shall be submitted to the Division as a Technical Revision to the approved plan with the
appropriate Technical Revision fee of-$216.00 by the corrective action date.
No other issues were noted during this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Aaron Tezak
Colorado Quarries Inc
270 S 15th St
Canon City,CO 81212
