1100318 R0T0 0811 JRW1 26
boring EXRW-1 are shown on the geologic map (Appendix 39). The logs of rock core borings
EXC-1 through EXC-4 and hollow stem auger borings EXB-1 through EXB-3 are included in
Appendix 41. The air percussion borings, air rotary borings and rotary wash borings, which
were performed for the installation of slope inclinometer housings or for piezometers, were not
separately logged. Rock core EX-G, which was advanced to retrieve additional samples of
granitic rock core in the Pikes Peak Granite was also not logged.
The core borings extended to depths ranging from 35 to 205 feet below ground surface using
truck and track-mounted drill rigs. Either HQ or NQ rock core were extracted from the core
borings. The rock core was photographed (Appendix 3), boxed and stored on site. The air
rotary borings and rotary wash boring EXRW-1 were all advanced to depths of 150 feet except
for boring EXAR-2, which was advanced to a depth of 350 feet for placement of a deep
piezometer. The four air percussion borings were performed in the northern portion of Area H.
All were advanced to depths of 70 feet for the installation of piezometers. The hollow stem
auger borings were advanced to depths ranging from 42 to 54 feet below ground surface. In
each boring, the auger was advanced through fill material to refusal, followed by retrieval of a
5-foot NQ rock core to confirm the depth of the bottom of the fill and to retrieve a sample of the
bedrock. The rock core was photographed (Appendix 3), boxed and stored on site.
Rock and soil samples reflecting the kind and quality of the various rock and soil types
encountered during the field investigation were identified for laboratory testing at the
conclusion of the field investigation. These samples were boxed and shipped to Exponent’s
office in Irvine, California for trimming and photo documentation (in the case of rock core
samples) and then forwarded to independent outside geotechnical laboratories for testing.
Please refer to Section 5.2.4 for further discussion of laboratory testing.
A total of thirteen borings from the April and May field investigations (EXC-1, EXAR-4,
EXAR-2, EXB-2, EXB-1, EXC-3, EXAP-2, EXAP-8, EXC-2, EXAP-1, EXAP-6, EXAP-7 and
EXAP-5), plus two drilled shot holes drilled in 2008 (AP-A3 and AP-F5) were converted to
simple standpipe piezometers following the conclusion of the field investigation. The locations
of the piezometers (labeled P-1 through P-15) are shown on the geologic map (Appendix 39).
