Onsite water use will be limited to that required for dust suppression on roads and pads, and
underground mine development. Handling of ores on the surface will be limited to stockpiling, loading,
and dumping. There will be no milling or processing of ores, or tailings pond constructed or needed
anywhere on the permitted area. Waste rock will be assessed and disposed of on the surface if
determined to be inert; mineralized waste rock will be disposed of in a dry location in the underground
workings. Surface placement of waste rock will be in designated locations on each sites' waste dump.
The mine sites included in this permit are all in the Gold Creek watershed. The Raymond Mine is located
in close proximity to Gold Creek. The Upper Raymond Portal is above the Raymond Mine site in Spring
gulch. The other sites, Chloride Portal and Grand Prize Raise, are located in an unnamed gulch which is
tributary to Jones Gulch, which in turn reports to Gold Creek. Gold Creek joins Quartz Creek which in
turn joins Tomichi Creek, then the Gunnison River. Spring Gulch,Jones Gulch and its unnamed tributary
are all ephemeral, rarely containing any measurable surface flows. Since adequate sediment and runoff
controls will be installed at each individual mining site of this permit area, with those containment
measures to be sized adequately to handle each site's estimated needs, there will be no need for larger
containment structures farther downstream. Visual monitoring, water quality sampling, and addressing
any onsite needs in a timely fashion will be carried out throughout the life of this permit.
The operator will contact the CDPHE Water Quality Control Division to determine if a SWMP permit is
required. The plans prepared for this DRMS permit are designed to comply with possible requirements
of a SWMP permit.
Land Ownership
All proposed activity is located on patented (private)claims, owned or leased by the operator. These
patented claims exist as a large, extensive block. There are minor amounts of non-patented lands
intermixed in the patented claim area, but no mining-related activities are to be carried out on those
lands. Non-private land is in the national forestland system and managed by the US Forest Service.
Road Access
The sites are located up Gold Creek several miles above the town of Ohio City, via FR 771. The road up
Jones Gulch to the upland sites is a private road (though it is identified as FR 771.2A), and the private
road up Spring Gulch is identified as FR 879.1A. These private roads access the sites and also allow
national forest users to pass through the private land. The landowner has an agreement with the USFS
for the road easements.
No significant road improvements or changes are required for accessing the mining sites or carrying out
the mining-related activities. All road maintenance and road use will be monitored to ensure sediment
is controlled, surface runoff is controlled, and the roads are safe for vehicles and equipment.
Previous Mining Activity
As noted elsewhere, this permit will affect several small areas that were previously impacted by mining
by other operators. Wherever possible, this operation will strive to overlay planned new disturbance
over the re-usable surfaces of the old,to minimize the footprint of new disturbances, and to watch for
opportunities to ensure better reclamation of the disturbed areas in the future.
