PERMIT#:M-1974-086
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS
INSPECTION DATE:January 29,2020
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection of the Ralston Quarry conducted by Eric Scott and Michael Cunningham of
DRMS. Ralston Quarry is a 338.8 acre 112c permit operated by Asphalt Paving Company(APC) in Jefferson County
approximately 2.25 miles north of Golden and 0.6 miles east of Hwy 93. Ben Langenfeld of Lewicki and Associates
contacted DRMS to suggest that DRMS meet with APC at the site to observe the start of the slope stabilization project
approved by DRMS as part of AM04, as well as to discuss some proposed changes to the design of the project that will
be submitted to DRMS as a TR for approval. DRMS representatives met with Ben Langenfeld, consultant for APC,and
Jim Krattenmaker,APC construction manager, at the site visitor parking area. The group proceeded to the west central
area of the permit were work was commencing on the slope stabilization project.
Work on the project had only begun recently, and at this time DRMS observed sediment and storm-water management
features, exploratory test pits, staking of the placement of drainage pipe pathways, and the initial phase of removal of
topsoil and overburden on the southern end of the work area(see attached photos 1-6). The piping that will be utilized
to provide subsurface drainage has not yet arrived at the site.
APC and their consultants are proposing minor changes to the project as approved based on additional field data
collected prior to the commencement of excavation. These proposed changes will be detailed in a TR submitted to
DRMS for approval prior to implementation. Assuming that the TR for the proposed modifications is received by DRMS
in a timely fashion, and can be approved as submitted, the stabilization project field work is projected to take
approximately 3-4 weeks.
After a discussion of the stabilization project, the group moved to the working area of the quarry on the eastern side of
the ridge. DRMS observed the current condition of the south area of the pit where surface water had been previously
impounded. The permittee has re-graded the pit floor to minimize the area where runoff can collect, and has been
pumping water from the pit to its approved discharge point.
No other issues were noted during this inspection, and DRMS left the site to return to Denver at approximately 11:30.
Inspection Contact Address
Stan Opperman
Asphalt Paving Company
14802 W 44th Ave
Golden,CO 80403
